It would be nice to be able to say that every scrap of your train layout is a creation of your own hands, but that is seldom the case in the modeler's world. Your grandparents might have thought it comparable to cheating to get model train kits in the mail, but it can really decrease the time that it takes to have a functional setup.
There are many items in landscaping that are not easy to reproduce with the materials, tools, or know how that you possess. You may have the concept of how to perform a particular task, but don't want to spend the time and effort without knowing how it will come out. Many kits present things so vividly that you are afraid an effort on your part would only be inferior.
Although train kits are made for many parts of the train layout, the most common ones are for building structures. These are usually so complete that it is not necessary to add much to the interior or exterior. If the scale of your layout is very small, creating each piece by hand might be quite an undertaking, and it can try a person's patience.
The train depot is one of the most often purchased buildings for train layouts. They usually have furnishings, exterior elements, signs, and may even come with model people and cars. Some assembly is usually required to give the modeler a sense of personal accomplishment.
Although the roof is usually applied after you receive the kit, walls and framework may already be attached. Without the roof in place, you can place interior furnishings inside and run wiring for lights. Sometimes windows and doors are detachable.
Most model kits come with instructions for assembly. With a little imagination and direction, most people can complete all the work in a short time. When comparing the time that is saved from doing the work piecemealed and the cost incurred, it is generally well worth the money spent. Most crafters still put their own distinct mark on a kit by painting and aging the pieces to achieve more realism.
It is totally up to you whether you wish to use train kit components or attempt to create everything by hand. The most important thing is how you feel about your train layout, not everyone else. Model train enthusiasts everywhere use model train kits without giving it a second thought. Most attempt to add unusual and unique touches that brand theirs as different from the same kits purchased by other modelers.
